A mutual exchange is where social housing tenants swap homes with each other. Marion and Derek did just that. Here is their story:
Marion and Derek wanted to downsize to a smaller home so when they found out about http://www.houseexchange.org.uk/ they decided to give it a try. “We had reached a stage where we wanted a smaller house. We have six children and all but one has ‘flown the nest’ so we thought it was a good time to downsize. We knew that there would be a family who would really benefit from having a larger house and when we found out about House Exchange it seemed like the perfect solution.
“The website was just like an estate agent’s and it had information about the houses and pictures so we could see what would suit us best. The whole process was really quick, it took about six weeks to find the house and to move in.
Most social housing tenants are eligible to exchange, however it is worth checking with your landlord first to ensure you are not disappointed.
http://www.houseexchange.org.uk/, is a not for profit service where tenants can list their property details and also look for other tenants who want to swap homes. There are clever matching tools so you can drill down to a list of the most likely home swaps, contact them and arrange a viewing. House Exchange are currently offering a free subscription to their website, but you need to be quick though as this offer is only on until 1st of April 2011.
